Free Concert - Ayreheart (Folk/Celtic Rock)
August 10, 2014, 3:00 PM

Springfield Presbyterian Church, 7300 Spout Hill Road, Sykesville, MD 21784

Free Concert - Ayreheart (Folk/Celtic Rock)

Springfield Presbyterian Church starts its new, 7th season of concerts with an exciting addition to our concert series,  Ayreheart.... The concert will take place in our air-conditioned sanctuary and will be followed by a reception.  So, plan to come join us for a Sunday afternoon filled with wonderful music and delicious food.  Below is more information about the group and their members.

The members of Ayreheart wield some of the most ancient instruments used in modern music. The band centers around the versatile lute textures created by Ronn McFarlane, both as accompaniment and lead instrument. He conceived and founded the group in the wake of his 2009 Grammy nomination for the album “Indigo Road”, consisting of his contemporary works for lute.

This was followed by the album “One Morning” which formally introduced Ayreheart as a group. Now filled out by bass and drums, this staple rhythm section shows subtle surprises - fretless bass providing expressive foundation paired with percussion instruments from around the world, transport the listener with hypnotic drive.

Their songs are given life by multi-instrumentalist Brian Kay whose vocal range can summon tears from ethereal ballads and evoke revolutions from power anthems. Also in this band: Brian Kay (vocals, lute, komuz, mandolin, guitar); Mattias Rucht (drum kit, djembe, cajon, udu); Will Morris (bass, colascione, violin, mandolin). www.Ayreheart.com
CHARM CITY JUNCTION Live @ Baldwin's Station
August 14, 2014, 8:00 PM

CHARM CITY JUNCTION

Tickets $15.00 ~ Showtime 8:00 pm - 410-795-1041 -- www.uptownconcerts.com

CHARM CITY JUNCTION Live @ Baldwin's Station

Charm City Junction is a new band combining old-time, Irish, and bluegrass music into their own unique mix featuring Brad Kolodner on clawhammer banjo, Patrick McAvinue on fiddle, Sean McComiskey on button accordion, and Alex Lacquement on stand-up bass.

Rooted in the traditions of Appalachian folk music, Brad Kolodner represents the next generation of old-time musicians pushing the boundaries of the tradition into uncharted territory. Son of Ken Kolodner, a world-renowned hammered dulcimer player and old-time fiddler, Brad is regarded for his delicate touch, expressive style, and original compositions, Kolodner has rapidly gained national attention for his unique approach to the banjo at just 23 years of age. Clawhammer banjo is experiencing a rebirth in American folk music and Kolodner is helping to lead the charge as a performer, teacher, Strathmore Artist in Resident, radio DJ for WAMU’s Bluegrass Country, jam leader, community
builder and ambassador for Appalachian folk music.

It was at the age of seven when a friend introduced Patrick McAvinue to the violin. In view of his talents, his parents took him to private lessons. The three years he was classically trained during school helped him for when at the age of ten Amy Hopkins, a Peabody graduate, began teaching him fiddle tunes that came from all over the world. He then
went on to take lessons from Troy Engle, a multi-instrumentalist who has performed with Patty Loveless, Buddy Jewel, Oak Ridge Boys, and The Issacs. Patrick has participated in many fiddle competitions and was even honored with the title of Delaware State Fiddle Champion repeatedly from 2003-2005. He has also been a Candidate for International Bluegrass Music Association’s Fiddle Player of Year for 2009, 2010 and 2012.

Sean McComiskey is among the most innovative young performers on the button accordion, with a unique harmonic style that has earned him a spot in the pantheon of Irish accordionists far beyond his native Baltimore. As the son of legendary button accordion player Billy McComiskey, Sean has been surrounded by Irish Traditional music
his entire life and has developed a deep appreciation for the rich tradition of which he is a part. This has helped Sean establish a reputation as a highly regarded teacher and promulgator of Irish music and earned him teaching positions with the Catskills Irish Arts Week, the Augusta Heritage Center’s Irish Arts Week, the Chris Langan Weekend in Toronto, the CCE Musical Arts and Dance Week in Washington, DC, the Baltimore Irish Arts Center, and the Spanish Peaks Celtic Festival.

Alex Lacquement swears that it was beautiful sirens who lead him to the upright bass at the impressionable age of seventeen. His first music love which lead him to the upright bass was jazz music, something he studied vigorously at Eastman (MM) and James Madison University (BA). Years later he found himself chasing every opportunity
to play some happy thumping lines with bluegrass and old-time string bands. Alex also plays with Bumper Jacksons, Brad and Ken Kolodner, Tom Cunningham Orchestra, pick-up groups, and Leah Shaw. Presented by Uptown Concerts

BILL STAINES Live @ Baldwin's Station
August 21, 2014, 8:00 PM

Baldwin's Station, 7618 Main Street, Sykesville, MD 21784

BILL STAINES Live @ Baldwin's Station

Tickets $20.00 ~ Showtime 8:00 pm - 410-795-1041 -- www.uptownconcerts.com

Anyone not familiar with the music of Bill Staines is in for a special treat. For over forty years, Bill has traveled back and forth across North America, singing his songs and delighting audiences at festivals, folksong societies, colleges,
concerts, clubs and coffeehouses. A New England native, Bill became involved with the Boston- Cambridge folk scene in the early 1960′s and, for a time, emceed the Sunday hootenanny at the renowned Club 47 in Cambridge. Bill quickly became a popular performer in the Boston area. In 1971, after one of his performances, a reviewer for The Phoenix stated that Bill was “simply Boston’s best performer.” A decade later, both in 1980 and 1981, the annual Reader’s Poll of The Boston Globe selected him as a “favorite performer.”

In 1991, Bill entered his forth decade as a folk performer with an international reputation as an artist. Singing mostly his own songs, he has become one of the most popular singers on the folk music circuit today and averages around 200 concert dates a year. Bill weaves a magical blend of wit and gentle humor into his performances, and as one reviewer wrote, “he has a sense of timing to match the best stand-up comic.” His music is a slice of Americana, reflecting with the same ease, his feelings about the prairie people of the Midwest or the adventurers of
the Yukon.

“Any new song that can live comfortably beside the well-worn songs of folk tradition has a good chance of surviving the test of time. Such, we believe, are the songs of Bill Staines” ~ Charles “Sandy” Paton, Folk Legacy Records. Presented by Uptown Concerts Inc.

THE SOUND of SLEAT Live @ Baldwin's Station
September 18, 2014, 8:00 PM

Baldwin's Station, 7618 Main Street, Sykesville, MD 21784

Tickets $18.00 ~ Showtime 8:00 pm - 410-795-1041 -- www.uptownconcerts.com

THE SOUND of SLEAT Live @ Baldwin's Station

The Sound of Sleat is a Celtic quartet featuring Scottish small pipes, cello, piano, Celtic harp, accordion, guitar, and vocals. It is a unique blend of instruments with soul-stirring vocals, capturing both the vibrancy and subtlety of Scottish and other traditional Celtic music. Sleat takes its name from a peninsula on the Isle of Skye; the Sound of Sleat is the body of water between the isle and Scotland. Sleat in Scottish Gaelic and Old Norse means “smooth,”
very fitting for this great-sounding band. The musicians are seasoned professionals who bring together new and exciting interpretations of traditional piping tunes, airs, jigs, reels, strathspeys, marches and songs. In addition to ancient Scottish classics and rarities, they play music from Ireland, other Celtic lands, Cape Breton, and contemporary
composers. Their styles and moods range from dance tunes to ballads, from war to peace, then over to the pub and beyond! (Reverbnation.com/soundofsleatcelticensemble)

The musicians:
Pat Egan is well known as a guitarist and singer in the Irish traditional music scene both here and overseas. He was a founding member of the Irish bands Chulrua and the Hedge Band. Pat was a WAMA nominee for Best Traditional Vocalist in 2010.

Tabby Finch is a multi-instrumentalist and long-time member of the Bogwanderers Ceili Band. She is also a founding member of Mucho Gusto, a world cafe /Latin band; Jug of Punch, The Scones, an Irish pub band, and performs in a duo with Pat Egan.

Karin Loya was for many years a member of Fynesound, a Scottish / Irish quartet, and now plays with A Sheep at the Wheel and The Splendid Shilling Consort. Karin’s CD, A Sheep at the Wheel, was a WAMA nominee for Best Traditional Recording in 2010. Bob Mitchell was for many years a member of Iona and Jennifer Cutting’s Ocean Orchestra. In addition to performing on the small pipes, he is a Highland piper in demand for weddings, festivals, and special events. Presented by Uptown Concerts Inc.
